01 · The material
What is thermo-aspen?
Thermo-aspen is European aspen modified with controlled heat and steam. The process changes the wood's moisture response, deepens its color from pale cream to golden brown, and improves dimensional stability. A representative treatment cycle can take roughly 36 to 72 hours across heating and drying, modification, then cooling and conditioning.
The practical benefit in a sauna is not a magic, maintenance-free board. It is a smooth, resin-free material that moves less through repeated humidity cycles and is available as a coordinated interior system.
Modification temperatures depend on the species, equipment, pressure, and intended end use. Conventional and pressurized processes can reach their targets at different temperatures, so one number pulled from a chart is not a material-quality standard. See the sourced process guide for the complete framework.

02 · The choice
Thermo-aspen vs. cedar, alder, and plain aspen
| Material | Visual character | What buyers like | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermo-aspen | Warm golden brown, fine and quiet grain | Resin-free, stable, matched profiles and bench parts | Soft surface; color varies; long-length freight |
| Plain aspen | Very light cream, low contrast | Bright small rooms, clean Nordic look | More visible color change and movement over time |
| Alder | Light honey to warm reddish brown | Fine grain, comfortable touch surfaces | Species and modification level change the tone substantially |
| Western red cedar | Varied red-brown color, pronounced grain | Familiar North American sauna character and aroma | Clear grades can be expensive; scent and color variation are not for everyone |
Choose by the room you want, not by a generic “best sauna wood” ranking. If you want dark, quiet, modern walls without a cedar aroma, thermo-aspen is an unusually complete option. If you want the palest possible room, start with plain aspen. If aroma and North American character matter most, compare clear cedar in person.
03 · The system
Walls are only the beginning.
A complete thermo-aspen interior can include wall and ceiling cladding, bench finish boards, skirts, backrests, cove and corner trim, a prehung door, vent grilles, headrests, floor grids, and prebuilt bench modules. The value of staying inside one material family is coordination: color, grain, and part selection are easier to manage.
Profile shorthand
STS4 is the calm tongue-and-groove default. STEP uses deep square channels. KYTE creates a multi-level motion pattern. VIRE is contoured and most expressive under grazing light. SHP is the smooth, rounded-edge format used for benches and other touch surfaces.
04 · Build and care
Respect the details that let good wood stay good.
Before installation
Confirm the delivered profile, lengths, bundle quantities, and lot color before cutting. Store boards dry, protected, and supported. Follow Thermory's acclimation and installation instructions for the exact product.
Fastening and layout
Use stainless-steel fasteners appropriate for sauna humidity and conceal them through the profile where the drawing permits. The conference presentation discusses A2 stainless for general conditions and A4 for coastal exposure, but the exact product and fastener manufacturers must approve the grade for your project. Leave the manufacturer-required ventilation and expansion details. Vertical and horizontal layouts are both possible, but backing, drainage, trim transitions, and the visual cut plan must be resolved first.
Cleaning and care
Let the room dry after use, wipe touch surfaces, and clean with sauna-appropriate products. Avoid pressure washing and harsh bleach products. Sanding and sauna-specific protective treatments can refresh worn touch surfaces when the manufacturer's care guide allows them.
