The thermo-aspen material standard
Thermo-aspen is not ordinary aspen with a dark surface. Controlled heat and steam change the wood through its cross-section, improving how it handles moisture while preserving the smooth, resin-free character that works so well in a sauna.
Working definition
European technical guidance defines thermally modified timber as wood whose properties are changed by exposure above 160°C in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere. Heat and steam do the work. It is not pressure-treated lumber, a topical stain, or a chemical preservative coating.
The treatment cycle
A representative process takes roughly 36 to 72 hours. Exact targets vary with species, cross-section, equipment, pressure, and intended end use.

Process literacy
Temperature matters, but it is only one part of a treatment schedule. Conventional processes can describe medium modification around 190°C and intense exterior modification at 215°C or more. Pressurized systems can reach the intended result at lower temperatures.
That is why two credible documents can show different numbers. Compare the complete method and the declared end use, not one temperature pulled out of context.
Treatment intensity generally increases across the spectrum. Species, pressure, steam, time, and equipment change the exact setpoint.
Material quality
Color is the first thing you notice. It is not the standard. These are the more useful questions for comparing boards, profiles, and suppliers.
The color change continues into the board. A dark surface alone does not prove that the wood was modified well.
Species, cross-section, moisture, pressure, temperature, steam, and time have to work as one controlled schedule.

Use stainless fasteners suitable for the exposure and confirm the exact grade with the product and fastener manufacturers.
