Use the right term before evaluating the claim.
Thermo-aspen is aspen whose wood properties have been permanently modified with controlled heat and steam. The generic process begins at a minimum modification temperature of 160°C, while the exact schedule and resulting performance remain product-specific.

Aspen
The tree and raw wood. “Thermo” does not create a new species.
Thermally modified timber
The standards-language category for timber permanently changed with heat and steam.
ThermoWood®
A protected name for products made by association members under an audited quality-control system.
Medium thermo-aspen
A manufacturer’s treatment and end-use description. Read it with that maker’s current documents.
STS4, STEP, KYTE, VIRE
Profiles determine shadow line, thickness, installed coverage, fastening detail, and quantity.
Source note: the International ThermoWood Association explicitly distinguishes the generic term “thermally modified timber” from its registered ThermoWood® mark. The mark is not a generic synonym.
02 · Quality test
Brown is a color result, not a quality certificate.
A serious comparison asks what was controlled and what evidence follows the board. Species, source material, cross-section, starting moisture, time, temperature, steam or pressure, monitoring, cooling, and conditioning can all change the outcome.
- 01Identify the producer and process.
“Thermo” by itself does not identify who modified the wood or how repeatability is checked.
- 02Confirm the species and intended application.
A sauna-interior aspen panel should not inherit exterior, structural, or pest claims from another species or treatment class.
- 03Ask for the current technical document.
Use the product sheet, declaration, tested classification, profile drawing, and installation guide that match the exact item.
- 04Check installed geometry, not the nickname.
Nominal “1×4” and “1×5” names do not tell you covering width after tongues, grooves, and reliefs overlap.
- 05Approve a physical sample, then inspect the lot.
A sample establishes direction, not a guarantee of identical color across natural boards or future production batches.
- 06Keep limitations beside the benefits.
Real thermo-aspen can dent, change tone, emit a characteristic scent, and lose mechanical strength as treatment intensity rises.

03 · Claim boundaries
What common language does and does not prove.

04 · Open coverage data

The table below transcribes the June 2026 Thermory catalogue dimensions for the five thermo-aspen profiles represented on this site, then applies transparent unit conversions. The calculations are ours; the millimeter dimensions and covering widths are manufacturer data.
For 100 ft² of STS4 1×4 at 80 mm covering width and 10% loss: 100 × 12 ÷ 3.1496 × 1.10 = 419 linear feet.

Use the factor as a first pass, not a cut list.
Net area should remove openings that truly replace cladding. A final takeoff must also resolve orientation, stock lengths, joints, corners, selective color matching, ceiling direction, usable offcuts, bundle rounding, and the guide’s approximate 5–10% material-loss range.
“Courses on 8 ft” is the ceiling of 96 inches divided by installed covering width. It is useful for wall-row checks; it does not include top, bottom, or assembly-specific gaps.
05 · Field checklist
Translate material quality into a durable installation.
Acclimate and inspect
Store packages flat and supported in the installation room under the guide’s stated conditions. Confirm damage, quantity, shade, and profile before sawing or treating.
Finish wet work
Complete painting, tiling, and other wet operations first. Install structural bench support behind the future paneling; finish cladding must not carry bench weight.
Preserve the air path
Use straight battens at least 20 × 45 mm, perpendicular to the panel direction, at 400 mm recommended spacing and no more than 600 mm, so air can move behind the full lining.
Top down, tongue up
Install from top to bottom with tongue up and groove down. Fix from the groove side and circle adjacent walls row by row to align the corners.
Use stainless clips
The current guide recommends a staple gun and stainless-steel clips. Set depth without crushing the profile; finishing nails are not suitable for fixing the wall panels.
Confirm the finish system
Thermory recommends a breathable protector and sauna-appropriate treatment. The surface must be clean and dry, and the finish manufacturer must approve sauna conditions.
Wipe, ventilate, dry
Use a clean damp cloth rather than running water, remove wet textiles, avoid pooling, and allow the room to dry. Thermory recommends at least a 30-minute drying cycle with the vent open.
Clean and inspect
Clean touch, wall, and ceiling surfaces; renew the approved treatment; inspect bench fastenings and supports; and carefully sand the full board length where a stain requires it.
